Request for Proposals: Editorship of Early American Studies: An Interdisciplinary Journal

The Executive Council of the McNeil Center for Early American Studies is entertaining expressions of interest in the position of editor of Early American Studies: An Interdisciplinary Journal. Applicants should be prepared to begin a three-year term on 1 July 2020 and to provide commitments from their home institutions to supplement the financial and administrative support provided by the McNeil Center. Proposals are welcome from scholars in any relevant discipline, and joint proposals by potential co-editors will be considered.

Working with a Managing Editor, and coordinating operations with the Journals Department of the University of Pennsylvania Press, the editor’s or editors’ responsibilities embrace all of the tasks involved in getting the journal to press and out to its readers.  These include:

  • maintaining a healthy flow of manuscripts by recruiting authors and scholarship in the field of early American studies, broadly conceived;
  • providing accessible submission policies that offer an expeditious peer-review process in conformity with our profession’s rigorous standards;
  • appointing the EAS Editorial Board, and overseeing its responsibilities and duties;
  • shepherding manuscripts from submission to publication on a rigorous journey that does justice to the author’s vision while accommodating the broad-based interests of our readership;
  • identifying and soliciting themes and editors for the special issues that constitute a regular feature of EAS;
  • building the journal’s membership and subscription base;
  • attending to the promotion of the journal’s digital publishing platforms such as JSTOR and Project Muse, building the number of article downloads, and enhancing the journal’s revenue stream;
  • navigating issues of open access;
  • developing and expanding social media platforms;
  • representing the journal at scholarly gatherings and conferences.

Interested candidates should schedule a preliminary conversation with McNeil Center Director Daniel K. Richter no later than 15 September 2019. Completed proposals will be due by 1 November 2019.
