Call for Participants: SHEAR 2021 Graduate Student Research Workshops

SHEAR is pleased to invite participants for the 6th annual graduate student research workshops, open to all current graduate students (or recipients of a 2019-2020 or 2020-2021 degree) with research interests in the era of the early American republic.

These workshops invite grad students and faculty to discuss common themes, important areas of research, and the challenges faced by scholars in the field.  Conversations in each group may turn alternately to subjects like archives, methodologies, and important secondary literature in their area. Best of all, these seminars help participants to network amongst like-minded scholars, and to find potential partners for organizing panels for future conferences.

Sessions will be held virtually on Wednesday, July 14, 10am-12pm EDT.

History of Science and Medicine with Tamara Plakins Thornton (SUNY at Buffalo) and Melanie Kitchel (Virginia Tech)

Women and Gender with Sarah Knott (University of Indiana) and Kabria Baumgartner (University of New Hampshire)

Religious History with Kate Carte (Southern Methodist University) and Ben Wright (University of Texas, Dallas)

Transnational History with Rosemarie Zagarri (George Mason University) and Eliga Gould (University of New Hampshire)

History of Slavery with Vanessa Holden (University of Kentucky) and Tamika Nunley (Cornell University)

Indigenous History with Jeffrey Ostler (University of Oregon) and Elizabeth Ellis (New York University)

Enrollment in each seminar is limited. We aim to assign participants to their first choice; but if that session fills early, we will accommodate participants in other sessions. To apply, please email a dissertation abstract (250 words max) to SHEAR2021@gmail.com  with YOURNAME_Grad_Seminarin the subject line by June 1st.  Include your graduate program (advisor, department, university), expected completion date, and your first and second seminar choice.
